As Betsy Shiverick recalls, “We kept driving by it. The house was in terrible shape, but it’s such a noble, iconic treasure.” And she had no doubt that Fairfax & Sammons — equally adept at classical-style new designs and sensitive updates to historic properties — was the right choice to undertake the project.
“Their level of detail is the highest of any architects I’ve seen,” Shiverick says of the firm.

Designer Betsy Shiverick's Breezy Palm Beach Home Is Picture-Perfect

The nine-story building was designed by classical architects Fairfax & Sammons and evokes a grand Italian palazzo-style building nestled onto Charleston’s bustling Marion Square. “Fairfax & Sammons had done a design charette ten to 15 years ago focused on bringing classical architecture back to Charleston and that really resonated with me,” Bennett says of his selection. – Cator Sparks, AD

“I wanted a modernist vein running through it to temper the traditionalism.” So they enlisted the services of Fairfax & Sammons, a firm specializing in classical architecture with offices in both New York and Palm Beach.

Masterpiece Classic
The exterior’s white-cedar shingles have weathered to a shimmering gray that recalls the small harbor and boatyard down the street, and it’s scaled to match up to older cottages nearby, built in the 1920s and 1930s.

Size Effects

As with their professional projects, Anne and Richard’s house is free of artificial materials; everything brought in will age and develop a natural patina.

Above the Fray

The apartment’s layout contained cramped private rooms built around a central corridor, and there was little space for storage. A new floor plan by architectural firm Fairfax & Sammons widened some living areas and turned others into closets.
