Upper West Side Artist Residence
Renovation in Manhattan, NY
The tall mullioned and transformed studio window, which has its original diamond-paned leaded lights, provides a backdrop to the composer’s Steinway grand piano, which is the main focus of the room.
Simple stile and rail wainscot paneling and a new chimneypiece take their cue from the English Arts & Crafts architect C.F.A. Voysey, while the brass chandeliers, which we also designed, were modeled on an original of the period seen in London. We made several small alterations to the plan, but we completely redesigned the internal finishes with the notion that the space would function both as a music studio for the owner and as a venue for salon functions organized by the Derriere Guard.

The treatment of the studio room was inspired by a photograph of the interior of Kildowie in Maidenhead, England, by Dunn and Watson, which shows a room also dominated by a large window with a window seat at its base, and a gallery round one side.
